Situated in the Redwoods just outside Santa Cruz, this project developed meditation gardens for the historic Redwood Chapel within the Mission Springs community. The garden design creates a variety of gathering spaces both large and small to compliment the ministry activities of the chapel. A circular courtyard provides the largest gathering space outside the chapel, while smaller circular platforms tucked just under the redwoods provide an opportunity for bathing in the forest light to reconnect with the spirit of place. Chapel doors open to stepped seating built into the forest, creating views from inside. Low stone walls define a switchback pathway up the hill to connect the chapel to the road, while plantings re-wild the hillside with native pollinator species within a sunny clearing to celebrate the light
